From an eighteen year old with an intense passion for music, to the sensation he is today, Vijay Chawla has indeed come a long way. The journey of the elixir that he spins is as interesting as the music itself. Having experimented with the art of mixing at ‘My Bar’ earlier on in his career, he went on to create waves in 2003 as the resident DJ at ‘Bike and Barrel’. At the time when funky house ruled the roost, he sought to bring in fresh new sounds, while creating a musical journey in his sets. With exclusive music and an equally magnetic personality behind the console, Vijay has taken Chennai’s night life by storm. His first accomplishment of sorts was to challenge the notion that the creation of Electronic Dance Music was particularly a westerner’s domain. Apart from bringing varied influences to the mixing table, like Electronic with a blend of deep house, minimal, tech-house and techno, his focus has always been on mixing, creating and recreating music for those who love it the most. And the quality is quite evident from the interest in his music which has amassed in and around Chennai. Right from individual DJ sets, to producing and composing, he can pretty much do it all! In 2004 when Vijay took the decision to make “Speed” his second home, there were several who didn’t approve. He went on to prove most people wrong. He mastered the skill of infiltrating into various genres of music and created a new and unique trend among listeners. Over the years, “Speed” grew to be one of the best night clubs in Chennai for Electronic Dance Music under Vijay’s watchful eye. His music made the club come alive, week after week, thus giving it an edge over the competition, one that every regular at “Speed” will vouch for. Constantly changing and evolving, his music was the result of an energetic influence, from progressive to techno to electro. Time only gave way to the use of better technology, which allowed him to play with a wider range of genres and cutting edge sounds. Exploring new territories is hardly a challenge for Vijay, as he continues to play at some of the most elite night clubs in Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Cochin and of course, Chennai and not to forget, several music festivals too. Though his first love is electronic music, it is not unusual to find him playing various other genres as well, the only difference being that the sounds are sure to be something out of the ordinary!
