Alter Ego was formed in 2000 by Lee Wilson ([l=David Gresham Records]' General Manager at the time) in an effort to bring more metal and underground alternative music to the fore in South Africa. It started by representing only [l=Music For Nations], [l=Nightbreed Recordings], [l=Earache], and [l=Jungle Records]. Alter Ego later took on distribution for several other metal, gothic and electronic labels such as [l=Nuclear Blast], [l=Century Media], [l=SPV Recordings] and PHD and distributed at least 40 labels from three continents along with its own roster of local artists before disappearing from the scene in 2007.
