Also appears as "Charly" only. Charly Records is a label specializing in reissuing old music, most notably from the [l=Sun Record Company] and [l34488] catalogs. It was founded in 1975 by [a=Jean-Luc Young] and [a=Joop Visser]. It was operated from offices in London (headed by Visser) and Paris (headed by Young). Although a British (UK) company, during their history Charly Records established several associated companies for licensing and rights, including Charly Records International APS (based in Denmark) and Charly Holdings Inc. (registered in the USA). In the 1990s they adopted proxy manufacture of CD releases via Movieplay Portuguesa, S.A.R.L., hence the [l=SPA] rights society found on such releases, although the discs were often made by [l=MPO] in France. All such releases were for the UK market only, with [l=Ariston] licensing in Italy and [l=Spalax] licensing in France. According to [a=Giorgio Gomelsky], a producer who worked with Charly Records in the 70s, the label repeatedly released and sub-licensed recordings without the approval of artists. Charly Records (UK) Limited was dissolved in 2001, and under new management became part of the [l5723] group. Distributed by [l=Snapper Music].
